Week of June18, 2017

danTALK

Friends:

Maren’s last day with us is Sunday, June 18.  She has led us ably and creatively in ministry as one of our associate pastors since 2006.  It’s tough saying goodbye to such a long-standing valued friend, colleague, and leader.

Just as we have benefited from Maren’s leadership I would like to think, with God’s help, we have helped to season her as a pastor.  Good congregations like ours have a way of doing that.  Maren will continue to do good work in and for and through Christ’s church.  I pray for Maren and her family as they begin the next chapter in their life in New Bern, NC.  Godspeed, friends, and stay in touch.

Last week I asked each of us to pray “What’s next, God?” and to listen and talk about what we discerned.  Part of the answer to “what next” involves staffing — interim associate pastor, interim youth director, and handbell choir leader — and a revised regular Sunday morning worship schedule beginning August 20.

I’ll talk a little about staffing today and then talk about our worship schedule next week.

Our Staff Relations Team, one of the hardest working groups in a congregation full of hard working groups, has already begun, with the authorization of our Session and in collaboration with Shenandoah Presbytery, a search for an interim associate pastor.  Our Staff Relations Team is also hard at work weighing the best way forward at this moment for our youth ministry and handbell choir.  Both of these ministries are strong and vital.  Our goal is to keep them this way and make them even stronger and more vital with effective leadership.

Another very hard working group is our Session’s Congregational Worship Team.  Their work — Final Report of Congregational Worship Team, April 2017 — has provided the Session with a treasure trove of solid information with which to work and upon which to deliberate regarding a revised Sunday morning worship schedule.  To the team members and everyone who provided them with such valuable input and feedback, thank you

Peace,

Dan

PARISH NURSE NOTE:  June 18-24 is National Lightning Safety Awareness Week. Lightning strikes around 25 million times each year in the U.S.  It is hotter than the surface of the sun and can reach temperatures of about 50,000 degrees. It is much more common in the summer, but can occur at any time of year. Over 45 people are killed by lightning strikes annually and hundreds more are injured. The safest thing to do is go indoors if you hear thunder. If you cannot get indoors or into a vehicle, there are some things you can do to slightly lessen your risk of being hit by lightning. You should avoid open fields or the top of hill. Stay away from tall objects such as tall trees or power poles. If you are with a group of people, spread out to avoid current travelling between people in the group. If you are in an open area, move to the lowest spot such as a ravine or valley and stay away from wet areas and metal objects such as fences. For more information please go to www.lightningsafety.noaa.gov.
