Week of August 20, 2017

Greetings Everyone!

This Sunday, August 20th, is the 11th Sunday after Pentecost. Our new Sunday morning worship schedule begins this Sunday:  8:00 a.m. in the Sanctuary with Communion, 9:00 a.m. New Stone Gathering in Fellowship Hall, and 11:15 a.m. in the Sanctuary.  Sunday school begins at 10:00 a.m. for all ages in Fellowship Hall for a special Rally Day gathering

The Scripture reading is Matthew 15:10-28, and the sermon title is “Thy Great Faith”.  Kelley Connelly, our youth director, handbell leader, and a first-year seminarian, will preach in all three of the morning’s worship services.  Songs at NSG will include “Your Grace is Enough,” “Lord I Need You,” and “Days of Elijah.” Music in the Sanctuary will be led by Soloists– Chris Stearns, Colleen Stearns, Grace Holmes, Allie Swiger, Kimberly Aikens, and Cody Williams (cajon)

 RALLY DAY IS THIS SUNDAY-AUGUST 20th:  All ages are invited to gather for to kick off a new year of FPC Educational Ministries.  There will be a short program at 10am in Fellowship Hall!  Children’s and youth classes will dismiss to their Sunday School areas following the program and adults will have time to hear more about Adult Educational offerings and connect with ministry leaders and one another.

KELLEY CONNELLY’S FINAL SUNDAY with FPC is this Sunday, August 20th.  She will soon be heading to Union Presbyterian Seminary to pursue a Master of Divinity degree.  There will be a time to celebrate Kelley’s ministry at the SC Youth Mission Trip luncheon beginning at 12:30 on the 20th in Fellowship Hall. All are invited to take part in this special celebration of ministry!

MISSION TRIP LUNCH THIS SUNDAY: Join the South Carolina Youth Mission Trip team for lunch at 12:30 in the Fellowship Hall.  Come break bread with your church family, hear the stories about the week and learn more about Youth Missions.  A love offering will be taken at the door.  We hope you can join us!

HELP US CELEBRATE! Mike and Nelda Head invite the congregation to celebrate their 50th anniversary by sharing refreshment in the Gathering Hall, Aug 20, following the 9:00 a.m. service.

THE SYCAMORE CLASS invites you to join them in a prequel to the whole-church Reformation Sunday School class that begins in September. Beginning on August 20 following the Sunday school rally and each Sunday school hour until September 24, the class will be discussing the book The Reformation for Armchair Theologians. We meet in the Graham Room. The book, available in multiple formats from Amazon, is authored by Glenn S. Sunshine and was published by Westminster John Knox Press. (ISBN- 978-0664228156) And yes, the book has cartoons!

OUR WOMEN’S MINISTRY (MARY & MARTHA) is hosting a yoga night on August 24th at 7:00 p.m. Caroline Felix will be teaching the class in the Rumble Room. Join us for a fun night of fellowship and exercise. All are welcome!

MEETING OF THE CONGREGATION:  The Session has called a meeting of the congregation for Sunday, August 27 at 10:50 a.m. in the sanctuary for the purpose of hearing the report of the Nominating Committee & electing an Associate Pastor Nominating Committee [APNC].

The congregation-elected Nominating Committee is:  Lynn McCauley, Chairperson, Marsha Barley, Linda Challinor, David Cress, Teresa Hoffman, Susan Kagey, Desi Morefield, and Libby Solak.

The Nominating Committee will nominate the following persons for election to serve as our Associate Pastor Nominating Committee: Bridget Aikens, Dale Barley, Mary Carolyn McLaughlin, Chris Holmes, Dick Creasey, DeeDee Corsnitz, Dave Lawall, Colleen Stearns, and Beth Thompson.

NEW BIBLE STUDY FOR WOMEN: On Wednesday, August 30 at 7:30 pm in the Graham Room there will be a brainstorming meeting for a new Women’s Bible Study group.  Please join us for fellowship (there will be snacks!) and discussion about ideas for this new group.  If you can’t join us but would like to offer input, please contact Amy Bowman (amybowman07@gmail.com).  The Wednesday morning women’s group will continue to meet at 9:15 am beginning in the fall.

WOMEN’S EVENING BIBLE STUDY is starting!! We’re having an informational/organizational meeting on Wednesday 8/30/17 at 7:30 PM in the Graham Room.  Drinks and snacks provided! See you there!

JUBILEE KITCHEN needs some volunteers for September! Help us share Christ’s love with our neighbors on Saturday 9/2/17 from 9:30AM-1:00PMin Fellowship Hall.

THE FIRST FRIDAY RECITAL SERIES RETURNS! Our first recital of the season will host Murphy Henry’s Tip Jam Jammers featuring Christopher Henry. This bluegrass concert will be held September 1st at 6 p.m. on the lawn in front of the Fellowship Hall entry (weather permitting). Bring your friends, family, and a chair, if available! This is a fun way to share in fellowship for the entire family. Come help us kick-off the series!

THE HANDBELL CHOIR IS SEEKING PARTICIPANTS! If you have ever played bells before, you know how truly fun it is. If you’ve never played but are interested, you’re in for a great experience. Ask anyone who’s ever played! The Handbell choir meets on Monday nights at 7 p.m. If you’re interested, please contact giovanna@fpcwinc.org.

PHOTOS FOR AN UPDATED DIRECTORY:  Photographers from Lifetouch will be helping FPC create a new church directory in Loudoun Hall from Sept. 7 to 9, Sept. 15 to 16.  On weekdays, have your picture taken between 1:30 & 9:00 pm. On Saturdays, photographers will be available between 9:30 & 4:00 pm.   Please sign up on the list on the bulletin board outside the sanctuary.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS!  The MUSIC MINISTRY will resume all choirs and ensembles the week after Labor Day. More details to follow soon!

FLOWER DATE OPENINGS:  Sundays, September 3 and December 3 are available if you would like to place flowers on the worship center in the sanctuary either in memory of a loved one or in honor of someone special.  If interested, please contact the church office at 540-662-3824.

SAVE THE CRATES!  Please bring egg cartons for the Highland Food Pantry once again and place them in the container in the Gathering Space to help distribute donations of eggs to clients. Thanks to all of you who support the pantry in any way – you are truly a blessing to many.

*Weekday School Chapel Teacher:  FPC is seeking to hire someone of our congregation to provide leadership for the Weekday School Chapel program.  Chapel occurs two weekday mornings per week two weeks out of each month.  If you would like more information about the position, contact Todd Bowman, (540) 662-3824todd@fpcwinc.org.

FIRST PRESBYTERIAN WEEKDAY SCHOOL is seeking experienced teachers to fill positions in 2 and 3 year old classrooms, CDA/AA or higher is a must.  2-day, 3-day, 5-day positions available.  Please send resume to wds@fpcwinc.org .’

WORSHIP AND DISCIPLESHIP COUNCIL NEEDS HELP in preparing weekly communion for the new 8:00 worship service. We are asking that you consider taking one month of communion preparation during the trial period: September, October, November, December, and January. Responsibilities include: preparing bread and wine (regular loaves and gluten free wafers); setting table – includes placing table in at center of worship area in sanctuary; arranging elders to serve with the pastor(s) – we will need 2-3 elders; cleaning up plates and chalices after the service.  If you are willing to take on this responsibility or know of someone who might like to do this quiet but significant service for members of First Presbyterian Church, please call me 540-665-1710 or e-mail me at mfjeffries@comcast.net.

CHILDSAFE CENTER-CAC GALA: Get Ready to Rumble! Put on your Poodle skirts and Leather jackets and join the ChildSafe Center-CAC for our Nifty 50’s Gala and 4th Annual Celebration of the Decades. On Sat. Sept. 30th, 7P step back into the era of Ducktails, Bobby Sox, Glee Clubs and those Blue Suede Shoes! Rock-n-Roll the night away to the sounds of Push to Start and enjoy a meal and beverages from our diner.  Prizes will be awarded for best costumes and a sock hop dance-off will also take place. HAVE YOU HERD??? Children’s Ministry is heading to Hedgebrook Farm to volunteer with the community garden! REGISTER FOR SUNDAY SCHOOL With the start of a new year we ask all parents to complete a new Sunday School registration form.  Blank forms are on the CM table in the main hallway or families can register online at: http://fpcwinc.org/ss-reg-form .All children 2-12th grade can be included on one form.

1ST GRADERS– On September 10th we will welcome all our 1st graders to join with the older children, youth, and adults in worshipping together for the entire worship hour.  Our first graders are welcomed to participate in WOW up until that day.  Parents– make sure to show your children have the opportunity to use the larger worship bag and the Children’s Own Worship Library outside the sanctuary.  We hope these will be helpful resources for your child as they worship.


Sunday School for 5-12th Graders:
After the Rally Day Gathering in Fellowship Hall youth will move to their respective Sunday School areas as listed.  The 5-6th grade class meet in room B8, the 7-8th grade class will meet on the 1st floor of 12 East Cork, the 9-12th grade class will meet on the 2nd floor of 12 East Cork .
