Prayer is the heart of worship, both personal and corporate.  In prayer, through God’s Holy Spirit, people seek after and are found by the one God who has been revealed in Jesus Christ.  In prayer, believers listen and wait upon God, call God by name, remember God’s gracious acts, and offer themselves to God.  Prayer may be spoken, sung, offered in silence, or enacted.  Prayer grows out of the center of a person’s life in response to the Holy Spirit of God.  Prayer is shaped by the Word of God in the Bible and by the life of the Christian community.  Prayer issues in commitment to join God’s work in the world.

When asked by his disciples how to pray, Jesus told them to “Pray in this way:

Our Father in  heaven, hallowed be thy name.
Your kingdom come.
Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.
And do not bring us to the time of trial, but rescue us from the evil one.”  Amen.
