Faith of Modern U.S. Presidents with Dr. David Holmes of the College of William and Mary

August 19, 2013 by Dan McCoig

David Holmes

Many of our Presidents have been men of deep personal faith.  Others have been less religious.  Whatever their personal profession, religion has often been a significant issue in presidential elections and in the discussion of public issues.

David Holmes, Professor of Religious Studies Emeritus at William and Mary will be making three presentations on this timely and engaging  topic in a visit to Winchester, September  15-17, sponsored by First Presbyterian Church and Shenandoah University’s departments of religion and history and the Center for Public Service and Scholarship. Holmes is the author of The Faiths of the Founding Fathers and The Faiths of the Postwar Presidents.

The lectures are free of charge.

Lecture schedule:

Sun, Sept 15, 6:30 p.m. — First Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall: From Truman to Clinton: The Faiths of Eight Postwar Presidents

Mon, Sept 16, 7:30 p.m. – Hester Auditorium, Shenandoah University:  No Religious Issue Whatsoever: Nixon, Kennedy, and the  Presidential Election of 1960

Tues, Sept 17, 7:30 p.m. – Hester Auditorium, Shenandoah University: Genuine Believers?  The Faiths of George W. Bush, Barack Obama, and Jeremiah Wright

Drama Team Forming

February 19, 2013 by Dan McCoig

Anyone interested in exploring the possibilities for a drama ministry at FPC is encouraged to meet on Wednesday evening, March 20, at 6:45 pm in Fellowship Hall (immediately following our last Wonderful Wednesday meal). The purpose of this meeting is to generate ideas for a drama ministry and to gauge potential support for a ministry designed to make contributions to the life of our church through short dramatic presentations as part of our Sunday morning worship and/or a major dramatic/musical production in the longer term.

For additional information, please contact Don Winstead.

As we shift back into our weekly routines, take time to reflect on what it means to be a Patriotic member of the Jesus following movement.

The full quote from Dan’s sermon is below.

“Lastly, and I think Jesus followers in America need to really hear this.  I know I do.  You see, we love our liberty.  It’s baked into our founding documents.  It’s in our national anthem — we are the land of the free.  The Ten Commandments are for free people.  Freedom is not license to do as we darn well please.  That’s not freedom at all.  That’s licentiousness.  Freedom is freedom within ethical parameters and norms.  In the Jesus following tradition, the Ten Commandments provide the parameters and norms.”

“St. Francis was known as a nature lover. He saw “St. Francis was known as a nature lover. He saw the hand of God in all creation. The hymn we know today as “All Creatures of our God and King” is from St. Francis’ writings entitled, “Canticles of the Sun.” It has been said to have been written a year before St. Francis’ death, on a hot summer day in 1225, while Francis was ill and suffering the loss of his eyesight. It was written as a love letter to God and God’s creation.”

"Humanity is a rainbow. We come in a lot of colors "Humanity is a rainbow. We come in a lot of colors and hues. We are not all alike. We are different in untold and perhaps even countless ways. But we are also similar in more ways that we might imagine. Theologically, the main similarity is that we are each created in the image of God. Our diversity is not something to be feared or exploited. It’s something to be celebrated, embraced.

One word that well describes God’s world is diversity. In Luke’s account of Pentecost in Jerusalem, he describes multiple reactions to the diversity present that day — bewilderment, amazement, astonishment. Fear was not one of the reactions."

It looks like advocating for our children’s safety and right to an education, and hope to grow up. It looks like writing letters to our governing officials both locally and nationally.
