Understanding Our Councils
First Presbyterian Church is governed by a Session made up of elected elders, the installed pastor as moderator, a treasurer, and a clerk of session. In the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), the Session is responsible for the overall leadership, mission, programs, and policies of the congregation, with two responsibilities reserved specifically for the congregation: the election of officers (including pastors) and decisions related to the buying, selling, or mortgaging of church property.
To carry out this work faithfully and effectively, the Session is supported by five councils: Administration, Facilities, Mission, Worship & Discipleship, and Congregational Life. Each councils leadership is typically composed of three elders—one from each class of elders—together with additional members of the congregation who bring their gifts, skills, and experience to the council’s work.
Elders serve three-year terms and act as moderators of the councils, as well as representatives who report to and participate in the monthly Session meetings. While any member of the congregation may serve on a council, elders provide leadership, guidance, and accountability on behalf of the Session. Current ruling elders are listed on the leadership page of our website.
Through this shared structure of Session and councils, FPC seeks to lead the church faithfully, steward its resources wisely, and support the mission and ministries of the congregation in service to Christ.
